------------------------------------------------------------------------------- INTRODUCTION (SGI) NEW USERS - how to start - Vocabulary: action == icon or button (most HP actions appear as buttons on SGI) button == a menu entry line command == a command you type in a text window (xterm, hpterm) 4Dwm = default visual interface - Read this file ("Local info" button, or "linfo" command) - "showloc" command - News (buttons "News", command "news") - Read internal HELP for utilities (TeX,...) - SGI help ("Online books") - man pages GOOD POLICY Users are advised to log out/log in from time to time to see various announcements. All announcements are on-line. Remember that working via NFS prevents you from seeing the on-line announcements. There are actions (icons) for each of them. LOCAL INSTALLATIONS Local utilities appear in VUE in at least one of these forms: (1) actions (icons); you must open the File Manager on /usr/local/bin (typically) and drag the icons to a new page which you can create under the "Find" entry; this will correspond the the Personal Toolbox of HP VUE. (2) controls (buttons) on the main menu and submenus (3) line commands (use "showloc" to list these) (4) various programs in /usr/local/bin and /usr/local/X11R5/bin NB. Using "buttons" is strongly advised. Running "X" programs from a command line may not load proper resources or set the keyboard properly. All actions defined for 4Dwm are also callable from fvwm and other window managers you may prefer. Please consult sysdmin for details. Terminal windows: use special actions (icons) to connect to remote machines. All windows are set to VT100. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SPECIFIC UTILITIES PRINTING (1) lp prints on jupiter printer. (2) Printer icons can be put on desktop from System/Printer Manager (3) /usr/local/bin/lprju.csh prints to jupiter, jupiter print commands can be used (txtps). (4) a2ps, psnup convert text files to PS which can then be sent to printer by "lp" (lprju.csh also does that). TeX Preferred use: click the Local/TeX setup button. Tear-off the subpmenu with TeX actions. You need not close any window opened by the lion until end of work. HELP: click "Menu help" in the lion icon pop-up subpanel.
